Skokie Swift to Reopen This Month

By Nick Gale, WLS News

CTA Yellow Line riders could see service restored this month.

The Yellow Line was shut down in mid-May after construction at a wastewater treatment plant led to an embankment collapse. The CTA says the line will reopen this month, but won’t set a specific date.

Once the work is complete, the transit agency will need about a week to test the tracks and signals.

In the meantime, riders have been using a shuttle bus from Dempster Street in Skokie, to the Howard Street station.

(Chicago) Almost four weeks after the CTA’s Yellow Line was shut down when an embankment eroded in Skokie, the transit agency still has no idea when service might resume, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

Last week, on June 3, the agency had said it was waiting to receive a repair plan from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, but that the plan “could” be received by the end of last week.

Apparently, the CTA is still waiting.

Asked Friday morning — more than a week later — for an update on the situation, CTA spokesman Jeff Tolman issued this statement: “The CTA is still working with MWRD to develop a schedule. The plan has not yet been finalized.”

At a CTA board meeting on Wednesday, new CTA President Dorval Carter J., had described the restoration work as “fairly complex.”

“This is something that’s not going to get done in a couple of weeks,” he told reporters following his first CTA Board meeting since being named chief. “I don’t want to put a timeline on when it’s going to be ready, until we finish the work with our architects and engineers. … In the next week or so, we should be coming out with some more definitive information.”

The Yellow Line runs from the Howard stop on the Purple and Red lines to Dempster Street in Skokie, with a stop in-between at Oakton. While rail service has been suspended, passengers can take shuttle buses through the affected area or use the No. 97 Skokie bus as an alternative, according to the transit agency.

Service was halted on May 17 after the ground gave way under the tracks during a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District construction project. The site of the erosion is near McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, about halfway between the Oakton and Howard stops. According to the CTA, the tracks are no longer stable.

The MWRD, its contractor and the CTA are all working to restore service, the transit agency has said, but it has declined to identify the contractor who had been working on the embankment at the time of the collapse.

The CTA estimates about 2,900 commuters per day use the Yellow Line between Chicago and Skokie.

CTA Yellow Line to remain closed for several weeks, repairs underway

(SKOKIE) The CTA Yellow Line will remain closed for several weeks as crews continue to repair a portion of the track damaged when an embankment eroded away.

Check for regular updates fromCTA here.

Over the next two weeks, crews will be measuring the stability of the site, and moving construction materials into place, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District spokeswoman Allison Fore said Friday.

After that, crews will have a timeline for final repairs, which will likely take several more weeks, Fore said.

The ground gave away Sunday during a construction project near McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, the CTA said. The tracks were no longer stable, halting the train line that serves about 2,900 people per day between Chicago and the northern suburb.

The MWRD, its contractor and the CTA are working together to restore service, Fore said.

“It is important to all parties to proceed in a safe and determined manner that will produce a reliable, safe service as quickly as possible. In order to achieve this, many actions are moving forward in a parallel path,” Fore said in a statement.

This week, crews have removed the tracks and worked to stabilize the area so ComEd can remove damaged electrical poles from the site, Fore said. Preliminary engineering designs are also being drafted.

Until the Yellow Line reopens, passengers can take shuttle buses through the affected area, or use the No. 97 Skokie bus as an alternative, the CTA said.

A portion of McCormick Boulevard is also closed between Oakton and Howard streets until further notice, a statement from the Village of Skokie said.

UPDATE: CTA Yellow Line likely halted for ‘several days’ due to erosion

(SKOKIE) Service on the CTA Yellow Line could be suspended for several days after an embankment gave way near the tracks late Sunday.

The issue was first reported about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

An embankment underneath the tracks near McCormick Boulevard began eroding during a construction project that is not being run by the CTA, rendering the tracks unstable, agency spokeswoman Tammy Chase said.

The line, which runs between Chicago and Skokie, has been halted and will likely be suspended for several days, according to village officials.

A portion of McCormick Boulevard is also closed between Oaktown and Howard streets until further notice, the village said.

Passengers can take shuttle buses through the affected area, or use the No. 97 Skokie bus as an alternative, according to the CTA website.

UPDATE: Yellow Line suspended Monday morning for track problem

(SKOKIE) A track problem has suspended service on the CTA’s Yellow Line Monday morning.

The issue was first reported about 10:15 p.m. Sunday. As of 5 a.m. Monday, service was still suspended, according to the CTA. There is no estimate for when trains will begin running again.

Shuttles buses are providing connecting service through the affected area.

The No. 97 Skokie bus is also a good alternative to the Yellow Line, according to the transit agency.

“We are working to restore service as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” the CTA said in a commuter alert.

Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time.
